Race-Bred Performance for the Committed Off-Road Rider

The Shimano XC7 (XC703) in black is built for riders who want a genuine race-grade shoe without stepping into top-tier S-PHYRE pricing. It draws directly from Shimano's flagship XC9 platform, with a stiffer carbon-reinforced midsole, a more precise wraparound upper and an aggressive cross-country outsole engineered for the demands of XC racing, marathon events and serious gravel riding.

The classic black colourway offers a clean, race-ready look that pairs seamlessly with any kit, and the construction draws directly from technology developed across Shimano's elite off-road footwear.

Available in Standard and Wide Fittings

The XC7 is offered in both a standard last and a dedicated wide fitting, giving riders with broader feet a true race-grade option without compromise. The wide variant is built on the same shoe platform, with the same BOA closure, midsole and outsole, but with a roomier forefoot and toe box that reduces pressure across the widest part of the foot.

Riders who typically find Shimano's standard last too snug across the forefoot, or who have moved to wide-fit shoes in their everyday footwear, are encouraged to choose the wide option for a more comfortable, secure hold over long miles.

Precision Fit With BOA Li2 Dial

A low-profile BOA Li2 dial sits at the top of the shoe and offers two-way micro-adjustment, allowing the rider to tighten or release tension in single-click increments without removing the foot from the pedal. Paired with a forefoot hook-and-loop strap and a wraparound upper construction, the closure system delivers a glove-like hold that eliminates pressure points and minimises overlap across the instep.

Pulling up on the dial fully releases the lace, making on and off easy at the start and end of every ride.

Carbon-Reinforced Midsole for Race-Grade Stiffness

Underfoot, a glass fibre and carbon-reinforced midsole delivers a significant step up in stiffness over the XC5, providing the direct power transfer that XC racers and fast gravel riders demand. The result is a more responsive, efficient pedal stroke under sustained efforts, while a small degree of toe spring is retained for comfort and walkability.

Aggressive Cross-Country Outsole

A moulded Ultread XC rubber outsole wraps the underside of the shoe, with deep, widely spaced lugs designed to shed mud and provide grip on loose, technical terrain. Threaded mounting points at the toe accept optional M5 spikes for additional traction in cyclocross conditions or steep, slippery hike-a-bike sections.

The SPD cleat pocket sits flush with the sole for stable, quiet steps off the bike, and reinforced toe and heel guards add protection against trail debris and rock strikes.

Breathable, Supportive Upper

The synthetic leather upper uses a wraparound construction that minimises overlap and stitching across high-pressure zones, reducing hot spots on long rides. Mesh panels through the forefoot and instep promote airflow, helping to keep feet cool and dry on warm-weather rides, while reinforced areas at the toe and heel add durability in real-world off-road use.

Two-Bolt SPD Compatibility

The XC7 is compatible with two-bolt SPD-style cleats, making it an ideal match for the full range of Shimano off-road race and trail pedals, including the XTR M9100 and XT M8100 series.

Recommended Cleats

The XC7 is supplied without cleats, allowing the rider to pair the shoe with the cleat type that best suits their riding style. Shimano offers two SPD cleat options, both of which are fully compatible with the XC7:

  • Shimano SM-SH51 (single release): the standard choice for cross-country racing, marathon events, gravel, trail and general off-road use. Releases through outward heel rotation only, providing a positive, predictable engagement that holds firm under hard efforts.
  • Shimano SM-SH56 (multi-release): releases through multiple directions, including upward pull, making clipping out easier and more forgiving. A popular choice for riders who prefer a less committed engagement, though most XC7 owners will favour the SH51 for race use.

For competitive XC and gravel use, the SM-SH51 is the recommended choice. The Fawkes Cycles team is happy to advise on the right cleat based on the rider's experience and intended use.

Fit Tip: Measure both feet while standing and use the larger measurement if they differ.

How to Measure Foot Length

Step-by-Step Measurement

  • Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor and stand on it wearing a pair of cycling socks.
  • Mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, then measure the distance between the two points in centimetres.
  • Repeat the process for the other foot, as most riders have one foot slightly longer than the other.
  • Take the larger of the two measurements and match it to the chart above to find the correct size.
