Hot summer miles deserve better than a sweaty road shoe. The Shimano SD5 (SD501) SPD Touring Sandal is the cycling world's most committed answer to warm-weather riding — a fully clipless sandal that pedals with the precision of a proper SPD shoe and walks with the manners of a trail sandal. Touring riders, bikepackers, café-stop cruisers and dedicated summer commuters: this is the footwear that refuses to compromise.

Glass fibre reinforced midsole, a stable rubber Volume Tour outsole, dual hook-and-loop straps and a recessed two-bolt cleat pocket — every element is engineered to transfer power, not heat. Clip in, strap down, and let the breeze do the rest.

Engineered for Warm-Weather Performance

The SD5 sits in a category of one. The synthetic leather upper and smooth mesh liner are built for barefoot riding, while the open-toe geometry vents the foot through every pedal stroke. No more boil-in-the-bag misery on July climbs — just airflow, comfort and a fit that holds firm whether the rider is cleated up or off the bike grabbing a sandwich.

Volume Tour Sole: Stiff Where It Counts

Underneath the airy upper is a serious piece of engineering. The glass fibre reinforced shank plate delivers the sole rigidity demanded for efficient power transfer, while the wider Volume Tour outsole spreads load across the ball of the foot for all-day comfort. The result is a sandal that pedals like a cycling shoe — not a beach flip-flop with delusions of grandeur.

Twin-Strap Lockdown

The classic dual hook-and-loop strap layout secures the foot front and back, allowing precise micro-adjustment on the fly. Riders can tighten down for a hard tempo effort, or back off for a relaxed touring fit. The straps are wide, supportive and stay put once set.

SPD-Ready, Flat-Pedal Friendly

The recessed two-bolt cleat pocket accepts any standard SPD cleat for direct clip-in efficiency, and the wide rubber tread makes off-bike walking secure and confident. Riders who prefer to leave the cleats behind can fit the supplied cleat cap and run the SD5 as a flat-pedal sandal — versatile footwear for tour days that mix riding, exploring and the inevitable pub stop.

Built to Last, Sized to Fit

Shimano applies its one-step cycling shoe sizing across the SD5 range, so riders already familiar with Shimano fit can order with confidence. The reinforced construction, durable synthetic upper and robust rubber outsole are engineered to soak up serious touring mileage season after season.

Fit Tip: Measure both feet while standing and use the larger measurement if they differ.

How to Measure Foot Length

Step-by-Step Measurement

  • Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor and stand on it wearing a pair of cycling socks.
  • Mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, then measure the distance between the two points in centimetres.
  • Repeat the process for the other foot, as most riders have one foot slightly longer than the other.
  • Take the larger of the two measurements and match it to the chart above to find the correct size.
