The Shimano S-PHYRE XC9 (XC903) sits at the top of Shimano's off-road range and represents the most advanced cross-country, marathon and cyclocross race shoe the brand produces. Every element — from the dual BOA Li2 closure to the carbon composite sole and surround-wrap upper — is engineered to deliver the precision, stiffness and weight-saving demanded at the highest level of competition.
The understated black colourway gives the XC903 a clean, race-ready aesthetic that pairs with any team kit or personal palette, and the construction reflects feedback from Shimano's sponsored World Cup and World Championship athletes.
Sizing: Please Size Up
In the experience of the Fawkes Cycles team, the S-PHYRE XC9 (XC903) comes up small compared with riders' usual Shimano shoe size. The wraparound upper construction and racing-focused last fit closer to the foot than the brand's mid-tier and entry-level shoes, and most customers find they need to go up half a size, occasionally a full size, from their usual Shimano EU sizing.
Riders who already wear an S-PHYRE shoe should stay with their current size. Riders moving up from the XC1, XC3, XC5 or XC7 are strongly encouraged to size up. The Fawkes Cycles team is happy to advise based on the rider's current shoe size and foot shape — customers are welcome to get in touch before ordering, and exchanges for sizing are accepted in line with the store's returns policy.
Available in Standard and Wide Fittings
The XC903 is offered in both a standard last and a dedicated wide fitting. The wide variant retains the same race-bred platform, BOA closure, sole and upper construction, but with additional volume across the forefoot for riders with broader feet. Given the snug nature of the standard last, riders who run wide-fit shoes in their everyday footwear are particularly encouraged to consider the wide option.
Dual BOA Li2 Closure for Race-Grade Precision
Two low-profile BOA Li2 dials work independently to control tension across the forefoot and instep, allowing the rider to fine-tune fit in two distinct zones. Each dial offers two-way micro-adjustment in single-click increments, meaning tension can be added or released on the move without removing the foot from the pedal.
The result is a closure system that delivers a glove-like fit across the entire upper, with no pressure points or hot spots even on the longest race efforts.
Surround-Wrap Upper Construction
The synthetic leather upper uses Shimano's Surround-Wrap construction, which minimises overlap and stitching across high-pressure zones for a uniform, conforming fit. Strategically placed mesh panels promote airflow through the forefoot and instep, helping to manage heat and moisture on extended race efforts, while reinforced areas at the toe and heel add durability without unnecessary weight.
Carbon Composite Sole for Maximum Power Transfer
Underfoot, a carbon composite sole delivers the highest level of stiffness in Shimano's off-road range, rated at the top end of the brand's stiffness scale. The result is direct, uncompromising power transfer through every pedal stroke, helping the rider extract maximum efficiency on sustained climbs, race starts and short, sharp efforts.
Aggressive XC Race Outsole
The XC903 features Shimano's most aggressive off-road outsole, with deep, widely spaced lugs designed to shed mud and provide confident grip on technical terrain. Threaded mounting points at the toe accept optional M5 spikes for additional traction in cyclocross, deep mud or steep hike-a-bike sections. The SPD cleat pocket sits flush with the sole for stable, controlled steps off the bike.
Two-Bolt SPD Compatibility
The XC903 is compatible with two-bolt SPD-style cleats, making it the natural partner for Shimano's flagship XTR M9100 race pedals, as well as the wider XT, SLX and Deore SPD range.
Recommended Cleats
The XC903 is supplied without cleats, allowing the rider to pair the shoe with the cleat type that best suits their riding style. Shimano offers two SPD cleat options, both of which are fully compatible with the XC903:
Shimano SM-SH51 (single release): the standard choice for cross-country racing, marathon events, cyclocross, gravel and general off-road use. Releases through outward heel rotation only, providing a positive, predictable engagement that holds firm under hard efforts. Recommended for competitive use.
Shimano SM-SH56 (multi-release): releases through multiple directions, including upward pull, making clipping out easier and more forgiving. Generally not recommended for race use given the level of intensity the XC903 is built for.
For competitive XC, marathon and cyclocross use, the SM-SH51 is the firm recommendation. The Fawkes Cycles team is happy to advise on the right cleat based on the rider's experience and intended use.

Fit Tip: Measure both feet while standing and use the larger measurement if they differ.
How to Measure Foot Length
Step-by-Step Measurement
Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor and stand on it wearing a pair of cycling socks.
Mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, then measure the distance between the two points in centimetres.
Repeat the process for the other foot, as most riders have one foot slightly longer than the other.
Take the larger of the two measurements and match it to the chart above to find the correct size.
